Ubu
When a smooth, rounded, bowl sits in the palm of one hand, the other is enticed to caress the full-bellied surface. The eyes also feel a soothing symmetry. The off-centered opening is nonetheless circular and balanced, but tilted, as one edge overshoots, continuing the vessel’s curve like a protective embrace. Ubus of graduating sizes nestle into each other forming shell-like petals. Here is a functional artisanal object, a bowl, a vessel, a pot; vitrified and inorganic; whose elliptical lines draw planetary orbits. It is a bowl and not a bowl … Hypatia’s cosmic crucible.
